Vodafone And 3 Merger Plans Offer Little Guidance For Customers

Angus Kidman from Lifehacker takes a good, hard, look at the 3 Mobile/Vodafone merger and how it affects you

Vodafone to merge with 3 Mobile:

When the story broke that Vodafone and 3 were going to merge their Australian operations, I was on a plane. But coming late to the news hasn't made much practical difference, because in terms of the impact on current customers and future product plans -- the two elements that are of interest to Lifehacker abd PopSci readers, rather than the fiscal mechanics of the deal -- there's not that much to know as yet. Even assuming the deal gets approved, the long-term nature (24 months or more) of most contracts means that it will be a long time before there's any change for most customers. Our most consistent criticism of 3 has been its high roaming costs outside capital cities, which will probably disappear eventually. On the other hand, 3's super-cheap mobile broadband deals will probably also get subsumed into slightly more costly plans. Given Vodafone's dominance in the new joint venture, if you were in the market for a new phone or 3G plan, Vodafone might seem a better choice. But the ultimate guiding principle should be the suitability of the deal as it stands, not how it might change in the future.

I'm a 3 customer and I've always found the customer service as well as the actual mobile performance and coverage to be pretty good.

If this merger means that we can use the Optus towers like Voda currently does, it'll mean even MORE coverage, so less Roaming fees.

Sounds good so far

To correct "We_Major" Vodafone use there own towers for coverage. I can tell you this as i'am a Sales Consultant for Vodafone. Let me add Voda's coverage is superior to that of Optus in most areas.

And is to have a vast update in June July with towers being made by Erickson so rural areas have 3G also, ensuring Vodafone is by FAR the second best for coverage out of the networks. This was suppose to occur in December, but was delayed due to Erickson.

"By far" might be a stretch yorka. Optus coverage is pretty damn good. I would be impressed if Voda could match it. Either way if you want the best coverage the shame is you're going to have to go with Telstra.
